1. Do not rub the affected eye, but rub the other eye.
2. If the foreign body does not wash out with the tears, fill an eyecup with a saturated solution of boric acid or a solution of a level teaspoonful of common salt in a full glass of water, place the cup over the eye, tip the head backward, and wink vigorously.
3. If the object can be seen, try to wipe out gently by using sterile gauze, or the corner of a clean handkerchief.
4. If the foreign body cannot be seen , or if you are unable to wash it out or to remove it, call a physician. It is important to have the object removed as soon as possible.
